Truth and Mercy series (Healing Retreat)

“For I, the Lord, am Your Healer.” (Exodus 15:26)

This is the awesome and solemn promise of God to His people. It is a solemn covenant to bring healing to us. This healing comes in the form of forgiveness of sins. It is the first and most devious enemy God desires to free and liberate us from. Sin itself brings a lot of consequences like brokenness, bruises, hurts (both real and imagined, past and present), conflicts (sometimes intergenerational and ancestral), familiar diseases and attachments. The victory of Jesus Christ on the Cross, opens the path for all of humanity to benefit and tap into this freedom. The Cross is the portal of liberation. Hence the Lord said, “It is finished.”

In the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we perceive God’s unconditional love. This love leads Him to the Cross. For He said, “There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). The manifestation of this love is in the passion, death and resurrection of Christ from the dead. It is this that gives concreteness to his love and everyone can have access to this freedom and wholeness. This is what we experience at every holy Mass we participate in if and only if we trust enough to offer all those areas of our lives that need healing to the Lord through the bread and wine offered by the priest at Holy Mass. The Holy Mass is an opportunity to receive from the Sacred Heart of Jesus what He already intends to give us from all eternity. That is why the Holy Mass is a continuation of Calvary. It is offering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in an unbloody manner. It is not a repetition but a re-enactment of the saving mystery for us again. Everyone who participates in the Holy Mass, actively and consciously, by singing, responses, with all the gestures, opens themselves up for the saving graces that flow through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Mass has infinite graces available. The more a soul thirsts, the more they are desiring, the more they are able to receive from this fountain that is unlimited. This thirst can be seen in the way they cling to the masters’ “garment” by listening to the sacred readings, reflecting on them, meditating on the homily and being uplifted in spirits to know what God’s plan is for them. They connect themselves by singing psalms to God, by refusing to be distracted, by entrusting their own personal offering to their guardian angel to unite with those of the entire community of the faithful. These offerings range from disappointments, discouragements, the wretchedness and misery of their lives, habitual sins which do not go away, physical ailments, a family challenge, a marital dispute, a child not in the faith or a grandchild still unbaptized. It can be anything. The Holy Mass is a Divine appointment, with humans. It is God meeting to receive us into a loving embrace with His Sacred Heart. “And I found delight in the sons of men.” (Proverbs 8:31). God delights in you and I. His Mother Mary does too. This is the reason both of them said YES to your redemption and mine. This is always carried out when we participate in the sacrifice of the Holy Mass.

This weekend will grant us a tremendous opportunity to receive various forms of healing graces. It is the weekend of our HEALING RETREAT. We have been praying and waiting for this weekend. Here it is! Let us come with BIG Faith and high expectations. God ever disappoints those who TRUST in Him with a childlike faith.

In union of prayers,

Fr. Nicholas Akindele, JCL
